The railway’s construction brought Chinese workers by the thousands, whose descendants have enriched Vancouver ever since. Experience this interweaving of cultures in Chinatown, where the fusing of Oriental flavors with local seafood has helped earn the city the title, “the Culinary Capital of Canada.”
After visiting Vancouver’s central highlights, ride the ferry to Granville Island. Stock up on provisions at the Granville Island Public Market and sample craft ales at Granville Island Brewing. From Granville Island, head to Queen Elizabeth Park on Little Mountain, a peaceful oasis high above the city.
When it’s time to answer the call of the wild, cross the Lions Gate Bridge to The North Shore, a wilderness where bears roam and salmon-filled rivers flow through old-growth forests. Granville Island
Granville Island is a peninsula and shopping district in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. It is located across False Creek from Downtown Vancouver, under the south end of the Granville Street Bridge. The peninsula was once an industrial manufacturing area, but today it is now a hotspot for Vancouver tourism and entertainment. The area has received much acclaim in recent years for its buildings and shopping experience. The area was named after Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville.
History
The city of Vancouver was once called Granville until it was renamed in 1886, but the former name was kept and given to Granville Street, which spanned the small inlet known as False Creek. False Creek in the late 19th century was more than twice the size it is today, and its tidal flats included a large permanent sandbar over which spanned the original, rickety, wooden Granville Street bridge. This sandbar, which would eventually become Granville Island, was first mapped by Captain George Henry Richards in the British Boundary Commission's naval expedition in 1858-59, and the island today conforms roughly to the size and shape documented at that time. A British Admiralty Chart of 1893 shows the island in greater detail and conforming even more accurately to today's Granville Island.

10,000 Ton Texas Tanker traveling the B.C. Coast
The Nathan E. Stewart/DBL 54 is an articulated tug/barge" (ATB) and is owned by the Texas-based Kirby Corporation, which is one of the largest petroleum product ATB operators in the USA. It travels back and forth up the B.C. Inside Passage by “special waiver" which exempts it from Transport Canada shipping regulations. These guide the movement of all other tankers operating in BC waters. As a result, it operates here with no Canadian pilots on board, it does not require escort tugs while maneuvering in Port Metro Vancouver, and most egregiously, it is allowed to travel north through Seymour Narrows and into the "voluntary tanker exclusion zone" that is the B.C. My cross-country adventure concludes in Vancouver, British Columbia - one of my favourite cities in Canada. It's got everything: mountains, nature, restaurants (sushi!), arts, and culture. It's a big city with the friendliest people and a laid-back west coast vibe. I was pretty exhausted by the time I got there (I had just visited 4 other cities, you know) so instead of an action-packed adventure, I took things easy. Vancouver is the third largest city in Canada and one of the most beautiful on the American continent, a dynamic metropolis set in a beautiful location with a temperate climate throughout the year.
Close to the harbor area, the city's skyscrapers have proliferated in recent years. The capital of the southwestern province of British Columbia has developed into an economic centre of renown.
The city's oldest buildings were built less than 100 years ago because the former wooden houses of old Vancouver were destroyed by fire. Several buildings reflect the origin of their inhabitants and are similar to those in the United States and Europe.
Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbor district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbor Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a 167-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbor and bay is overwhelming.
The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably.
For the World Exhibition of 1986, on the edge of Chinatown, gardeners and craftsmen from Suzhou, China established Canada's first classical Chinese garden, the Doctor Sun Yat Sen Garden. Its ponds, bridges and small pavilions are similar to those in China, masterpieces of Far Eastern garden design.

Inspired by the Colosseum in Rome, an elegant structure of pink stone and glass, Canada Place, is located in the busy centre of the new harbor district and is also the city's most recent landmark. Close by is Harbor Centre, a modern skyscraper complex with a shopping centre and a Skylift to the top floor. A glass elevator transports visitors to a 167-metre high observation platform where the view across the city, harbor and bay is overwhelming.
The exciting Skytrain is the city's most popular means of transport, an ultra-modern train built on posts that zig zags its way through the city. Each of the city's most important destinations are easily accessible and it has reduced the city's traffic problems considerably.

The Nathan E. Stewart/DBL 54 is an articulated tug/barge" (ATB) and is owned by the Texas-based Kirby Corporation, which is one of the largest petroleum product ATB operators in the USA. It travels back and forth up the B.C. Inside Passage by “special waiver" which exempts it from Transport Canada shipping regulations. These guide the movement of all other tankers operating in BC waters. As a result, it operates here with no Canadian pilots on board, it does not require escort tugs while maneuvering in Port Metro Vancouver, and most egregiously, it is allowed to travel north through Seymour Narrows and into the "voluntary tanker exclusion zone" that is the B.C. Inside Passage. As such, this unflagged foreign vessel blatantly flouts the concerns of the people of Canada, and operates here secretively without any social license whatsoever.

“Steeped in English Tradition and Colourful Charm” is how our Port Guide describes this little city that sits on Vancouver Island.
Today’s highlight was Victoria’s famous Butchart Gardens (Butchart pronounced like Butcher). What started out as a worked-out limestone quarry, Jennie Butchart set about beautifying the estate by creating these magnificent gardens.
The sunken garden being the most famous was once a very large pit. On entering, you look down to a stunning view of the masses of colour of the carefully planned garden. Following the zig zag staircase down, you continue along the path and around the pond with a surprise at every turn.
There are gardens to suit every taste including Japanese, Rose, Italian and Mediterranean. Many of the unique and exotic plants were collected by the Butchart’s during their world travels. Robert Butchart loved collecting birds, and was very proud of his pair of Woodland Ducks brought in from Germany. Whilst abroad he received word that both ducks had died after being attacked by an eagle. Since he was in Europe he insisted that they travel to Germany to replace the ducks.
Jennie was not happy as this meant they would miss their steamship back home. They would have to wait another two weeks for the next one. On Robert’s insistence they went to Germany, purchased and arranged for the ducks to be shipped home. Racing back to England, lo and behold they missed the boat by two days…
As I always say, things happen for a reason, and what was this reason?....... The boat they missed was the TITANIC!! ……. Believe it or not!!

Bio:
Ashley Sage-Taylor Armstrong, NHP. was born and raised outside of Peterborough, Ont. Canada. Where she grew up in cottage country on a lake, that was rich with all kinds of wild life, fields, forests and the perfect setting for a child's imagination and creativity.
Born into a competitive pro athletic family, in the snow sports industry, she quickly became aware of the healthy lifestyle her parents instilled through food, exercise, sports and a keen positive, hard working mental attitude towards team sports and then with life's challenges.
She later found her calling in the holistic field of consciousness, the vibrational tendencies of people, places, things and food became her greatest interest. For she is constantly continuing her studies in anything alternative from medicine to therapies of, mental, emotional, spiritual, physical and nutritional. Working on the entire circumference of one life's, not just the problem at hand. Her next challenge is her PhD of integrated medicine.
Ashley, is known in her communities for her inspirational work as a NHP, a Natural Health Practitioner of natural medicine and alternative therapies. As well as a Child Birth Educator and a Family Guide. Her love of everything natural, has led to an exciting life helping others, either in their homes, in her office and or running local mother support groups.
Her passion is not one sided, for she is a true artist with many facets and expertise, from high end jewelry designing, painting, creating probiotics drinks, vegetarian and raw foods, and now authoring her real life skills and morally conscious children's books. Where she hopes to spread the joyous love and conscious skills and morals, she learns everyday from her clients, husband and two darling daughters. With opportunity to travel back and forth between her homes in Vancouver, Canada and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, she is always over whelmed with the love and support she gets from family, friends and clients.
